Bavaria

Alps, lakes, castles, and the most host universities in the German Year

Germany's largest state and the strongest economy: BMW, Audi, Siemens, Adidas and Schaeffler all have their headquarters here. Munich is the most expensive city in Germany, while Deggendorf, Landshut, Amberg or Coburg give you real Bavarian life for much less. The Alps and dozens of lakes are a regional train ride away.

Housing

Dorms and trusted housing sites

Student dorms run by the Studierendenwerk are the cheapest option and include bills. Apply the day applications open.
Avoid scams. Never send a deposit before you have seen the room in person or on a live video call. A "landlord abroad" who will post you the keys is always a scam. More housing advice

Weather

Warm summers, cold snowy winters, especially near the Alps. The Föhn wind brings sudden warm, clear days.

Halal food & community

Munich (around Goethestraße near the main station), Nuremberg and Augsburg have many halal shops, Arab supermarkets and mosques. Smaller towns usually have at least a Turkish supermarket and a mosque association.

Local food to try

Brezn & Obatzda · Schweinshaxe (pork – ask for chicken or fish instead) · Kaiserschmarrn · Nürnberger Lebkuchen · Weißwurst (pork)

Tip from past students

If you are placed in Munich, start your housing search the day you get your placement. Cheap rooms go within hours.
